/images/ethan-hero.jpgEthan Russell has Floating-Harbor syndrome and cerebral palsy. He is nonverbal and has had more than 20 surgeries. Through all of it, he faces each day with a smile and a love of life.
Fighting for his education
Like many children with complex medical needs, Ethan didn’t fit the mold his school district was built around. Heather, a licensed therapist and former behavioral specialist, knew what Ethan needed to learn and grow, and she wouldn’t accept less.
She took the district to federal court for disability discrimination. In 2022 the case ended in a settlement that funded privately obtained education services for Ethan through his senior year: instruction, therapies, technology, and materials. She founded Russell Academy, a registered private school, so Ethan could be taught in a way that works for him.
“He would be robbed of the basic things children without medical issues and special needs get from public education.” — Heather Russell, speaking to inewsource in 2023
The fight didn’t end with the settlement. Heather has filed state complaints, testified before the school board, and taken Ethan’s case to state legislators. Every family should know how to fight like that, and no family should have to do it alone.
Going for gold

What Ethan teaches us
“I am grateful for my Ethan and his strength and resilience. May he continue to face each day with a smile and love of life and bring sunshine to those around him. I am so proud of him.” — Heather
